The presence of ticks and their abundance depends on several factors, such as climate (winter survival favoured in a milder winter), the natural environment, the type of vegetation and the availability of hosts (rodents, game...).
Ticks can be found in woods and on low vegetation. Because of their sensitivity to drought, ticks are mainly found in shaded areas covered with thick litter or densely overgrown with brush, ferns, tall grasses, etc. They are abundant in areas where there is no vegetation. They are found in abundance in forests and nature reserves where there is shelter and hosts are present. Tick bites therefore often occur while walking in the forest, but also in meadows, dunes and urban green spaces. Tick bites also often occur in the garden, because people spend a lot of time there.
